For example, it was exposed that organizations like Blackwater pay their "contractors" (mercenary soldiers) operating in Iraq $1000 one-thousand dollars a day! That's big bucks! Wow! This irks the typical US grunt (Be all that you can be!) who gets $98 dollars a week (pre-tax) with a bunk to sleep in and all-you-can-eat Spam sandwiches.

Long ago, in Japan, teaching English was the gravy train job like those clowns who work for Blackwater who are now getting paid massive sums of money off the backs of the American taxpayer (they hate them for their freedoms don't you know?) I wrote about how English teachers in Japan were getting paid $50,000 a year and more in Tokyo in 1979, 1984 and Today:

... I know, there were English teachers at our company getting paid, I'd say, on average, ¥700,000 per month. Some were earning over ¥1,000,000 per month. ¥700,000 per month, in 1985, was "only" about $2,756 per month in USD. By 1989, that was about $5,512 per month... And that was for 20 hours a week of classroom time!

Think about that! English teachers were so rare in those days that they were earning, on average, more than $60,000 a year in 1989. People who couldn't get a job mowing lawns back home were pulling down $60 thousand dollars a year teaching part time and sleeping with their students! Since I was a measly liaison, I was only making $80,000 a year to babysit those dumb foreigners (maybe not so dumb, eh?) I even knew a few guys who were making twice that amount. (Read more on that crazy but true story here)

But now, English teaching in Japan has fallen by the wayside as a good income generating endeavor. I think it is still good to pay the bills all the while you learn Japanese and make connections... But English teaching as an ends unto itself? Nope.


Besides that, the entire Japanese economy is in the doldrums. Why, just yesterday I was talking with a friend who is a business owner and he agreed with me when I said that we all had to work twice as much as we did five or ten years ago but we only make half as much money... What to do?


Well, if you are like me, then you think about these things a lot. I know that if I think about them too much, sometimes they freak me out. I'm the nervous type about this sort of thing and there have been times when I've woken up in the morning in a near panic-attack state worrying about my job or whether or not we'll have a place to live and food to eat in six months...


How about you? Have you worried about these sorts of things too?

I also have another problem in that, since I have a family, I can't really just blow what little money money I have on booze and drugs in one last "Hurrah" then go sleep down by the river and become some homeless dude. What will the neighbors think? What would my son say to his friends on the first day at school?


Teacher: "Alright, I want each of you to stand up, introduce yourselves and say a little something about your family..."


First kid: "My dad is the Asia Managing Director for Delta-United Airlines. You might have seen him on Bloomberg TV before."


Second kid: "My dad is president of Amazon-Google Japan. You might have seen him on CNBC Asia TV before."


Third kid: "My dad owns all the Rolls Royce dealerships in Japan and East-Asia. You might have seen him on CNN before." 


My son: "My dad is old guy living under the bridge with the huge beard. If you've ever gone on a picnic down by the river, you might have seen him before."


Naw... I guess I can't do that...


So, anyway, where was I? Oh, yeah... I have a phobia about going homeless; I can't do it. No matter what, I'd have to find a job and it would have to be a good paying job... So, well, that's why I'm here... And, I reckon, that's why you're here too.


Funnily enough, I was thinking about this just this morning when I was driving my son to school when right in front of my car was a "Vacuum Car." 


"That's it!" I thought, "A Vacuum Car!" Bingo!


Get this folks, guys driving "Vacuum cars" get paid huge amounts of money yet the Vacuum Car companies can't get enough staff and retain them to do that job even though the economy is in a down market! In fact, everyone in Japan knows that operating a Vacuum Car is one of the highest paid part time jobs in the entire country!!!... It's been that way for decades! And they always have a shortage of workers!!!! It's a goldmine!


Now, folks, before you get all hot and bothered about the mere notion of part-time job vacuuming cars in Japan and getting a $1000 a day, let me explain that the Japanese have some pretty bizarre ideas on how they take English and bastardize it for use in their own language.

Vacuum Car is a vacuum car, but not exactly the image you probably have when you hear this word. When I first heard his term, I imagined the friendly guy at the full service gasoline station vacuuming out my car. But not so!  


I don't want to go into a long explanation, but modern words from English like, "Google," "Twitter," "Facebook," are said, with Japanese intonation, just like the English equivalents and mean the same thing. Older words like "helicopter," or "escalator," are the same too... But there's many words that the Japanese have adopted that mean something totally different from the original. One that I'll never forget is the word, "Glamor." Glamor to you and me (supposed native English speakers) means something like charm, romance, alluring or excitement. To the Japanese, "Glamor" means...Well, "big boobs"... I suppose, in a way, that is alluring and exciting (if you are a guy)...

I have a notion that this one photo is totally responsible for the Japanese changing the meaning of "glamorous" from one meaning "charm" to one meaning "massive chest of drawers."

  
So, you can guess, "Vacuum Car" is not "vacuuming cars at a gasoline station." "Vacuum car" is for vacuuming but not vacuuming cars... Vacuum Cars are for vacuuming sh*t. Literally. Vacuum Cars are used to vacuum sh*t. And I don't mean little piles of sh*t off the carpet. 


I mean massive Jacuzzi-sized pool sized pools of sh*t.


That's right. They are for vacuuming sh*t... Oh, and p*ss... Sh*t and P*... As well as vomit, toilet paper, used diapers, tampons, condoms, used cooking oil, rubber bands, toys, old magazines, whatever people throw or drop into a toilet.


Now, in a modern society, with modern plumbing, toilets all flush with water and then that water and refuse flows out through the underground plumbing and sewer system to a publicly owned water filtration plant whereby it is partially filtered and recycled as your drinking water. (Bon apetite!) But what do people out in the country do where there is no water running and no underground sewage system? What do people do where their water supply is a hand pump to a natural underground reservoir of water and their toilet is a huge hole dug into the ground under their house?


What do they do when that huge hole starts to fill up and get all stinky with excrement?


Oh, that's where you come in with your Vacuum Car. The Vacuum Car guy is called and he gets about ¥30,000 a pop to vacuum these holes in the ground out. On a good day, they will get called to do three or four jobs in the same locale so those are the days they really, er, "clean up" (pardon the pun).  


But don't think this such a bad job! It's not at all. The story about having to physically jump down into the sh*t holes in the ground after you've vacuumed them out and scrub the walls and floors spic and span on your hands and knees is just an urban myth. It's not true at all. Though a diligent and conscientious employee will stick their head down there to see if any coins were ever dropped and make the effort to pick them up. (Reward is 20% for all monies recovered!) 

Customers get a 5% discount if they call us before the toilets overflow!

Also, I've read the stories written by some satisfied Japanese guys who've done this job and there's all sorts of perks! One guy I read said that, 


"The smell was so overwhelming that it filled every pore of my body. No matter how much I washed, it wouldn't go away. I could still smell it a week later. I couldn't eat anything for an entire week either!" 


Say! Sounds like a great diet plan before the summer hits! Everyone wants to lose weight so they can look their best before they hit the beach in their bikini, right? Me too! Wow! Get paid and lose weight? What a great deal.* 


(*Make sure you scrub with something like Ammonium Chloride mixed with tomato juice and gargle with Lysol everyday for at least two weeks before heading to the beach you so don't smell like a turd!) 


Also, friends, I don't think it's fair to the toilet lover society of the world for people to always be "taking the piss" (pun intended) of the toilet industry. I think it gets a bad rap. Perhaps bodily functions like p*ssing and sh*tting are not as glamorous (oops!) as dance, drama, writing and singing, but trust me, there are times when they are just as important and, dare I say, urgent?

Japan now even has a robot toilet that will follow you around the 

house so that you really can, "Sh*t in the kitchen!"

So let's not poo-poo this great industry, friends... For who knows, the way things are going in this economy, you and I could riding in a Vacuum Car together any day now... 


Oh, and don't worry about me, I don't mind driving... I've always respected the quality of your work so you get to handle the most important duties!... You did say you'd do anything, right?

Rant: What I Dislike About Many Greens and Environmentalists - Understanding Human Motivations

Let me start off by saying that we need to protect the environment. We need to keep the beaches, rivers, lakes and land clean. We need to take care of ourselves and our earth for our children and their children and their children's children. But we also need to wake up and see what is really important in our lives.

Snowing like crazy in Tokyo... Global warming, don't you know?

Now to the point: I'm really fed up with self-righteous militant and nearly militant Greens and Environmentalists. I am sick and tired of their ignorant and ill considered ideas. I am really disgusted by their "holier than thou" attitude and thinking that they are always right and you are always wrong. They are just as bad as religious zealots: I don't mind someone having their religion and their beliefs. Great! Do as they wish. But do not try to push these beliefs on me or other people. I really don't like their abrasive and antagonistic attitudes.


I also wonder just how stupid these people can be. On one hand they will complain about the government being completely corrupt and in bed with big business when it comes to things like nuclear accidents and BP oil spills... Or banking corruption and the destruction of the working class... Yet, on the other hand, they want the government to tax us so that they can take care of the environment? Astounding!


This is a government, in Japan's case for exapmple, that can't even handle the bookkeeping properly and now has the country on the ledge of bankruptcy and people want to give them more money!? That would be like handing care of your household finances to a crack addict and expecting that he will take care of things properly. 


Today it is snowing and it is snowing hard. This is at least the sixth time this year it has snowed in Tokyo. This is the hardest and deepest snow I have ever seen here. In the 27 years I have been here it has never snowed more than twice in any winter. Most winters it doesn't snow at all; and if it does, the snow melts immediately upon hitting the ground. But this is at least six times in one year! To illustrate the rarity of this more, just one month ago, on Jan. 24, it snowed more than 4 cm in Tokyo and that was the most snow in 6 years. Today's snow is much more than that!  

Thousands of people have died in Europe, almost 100 in Japan, because of this winters cold and snow... It is the coldest winter in nearly 30 years... But is it a fluke? Nope. Just two years ago, they said the winter of 2009 ~ 2010 was devastatingly cold. This year, 2012, is the death of the Global Warming Cult. R.I.P.


The rule of thumb is that if there is a crisis and the government comes along and says, "pay us more money and we'll take care of it for you." Then a wise person (and I do mean wise and intelligent experienced and thoughtful person) would automatically become suspicious. Trust me. Over 3 decades in the mass media and many years as a station news director makes me much more of an expert on that than any university professor.


Trust that everything you see or hear is told to you by someone who has a motivation for it. If it is on TV or media or in publications, then you can pretty much be safe in assuming that there is a strong profit motivation. If it comes from any government or quasi-government source (that includes your government, the UN, the IPCC, etc.) then you can be 100% sure there is a profit motivation. Motivation is the key word. If you do not understand this simple concept then educate yourself right now with this short video. Yesterday I posted about some Japanese kids terrorizing some monkeys in a zoo. In Japan, this didn't make national news. Please refer to: Kids Acting Like Animals Have to Apologize to Animals:


It also shows a good thing about Japan: Even though these kids were drinking underage and throwing fireworks, nobody claims that stricter laws need to be made for firework sales or alcohol sales.

Everyone knows that these kids were just causing trouble. People in Japan generally don't think about passing laws to try to make people into good human beings.


My point was that, in the west, people are confused with the role of government and personal responsibility. One intelligent reader also pointed out that, had this been in the west, it would have hit national news with an outpouring of sympathy for these animals and a public outcry for severe punishment meted out:


If this happened in the UK or US, the response would have been tremendous, and out of all proportion compared to the effects.


Since the animals were at a zoo, and therefore famous; the sentencing would be much more severe for the perpetrators, because the media would drum up the war chant of “murder the marauders who caused mayhem to the monkeys!” Plus in our modern era, what else is there in life, but to become famous? To be blunt, how else could a judge or attorney become famous, but to listen to the mob, and give them what they want?

In a similar city, there would probably be hundreds of poor homeless people that nobody cares about, and who would've wound up eating out of rubbish skips, and sleeping under bridges...


The militant Greens will gladly destroy people, property, business and lives to save the earth... They wouldn't lift a finger to save a human life. Here's an example: When making a program satire of the entire Global Warming Debate (being neither pro nor con) in 2007, an irate listener called the broadcast station and threatened to, 


"Come down to the broadcast station and set it on fire and kill everyone inside!"


I laughed and told him that,


"Please come along and try. I will be waiting for you alongside the local police and the fire department."


We never heard from him again. That was in Tokyo. Like I said, this has been one of the coldest winters in a long time... I wonder if he is still thinking about running around and setting buildings on fire? If he is, it's probably just to stay warm.


There are many, far too many of these militant (may I say frickin' crazy) people running around. They will violently protest the killing of 600 non-endangered species of dolphins in Japan (because, as the reader commented they are "famous" - and animals are "cute") but I don't see them protesting their own countries involvement with US and NATO bombing and the starvation tactics and killing of millions of Iraqi people and children...


Or for another example, there are people who are taking dog and cat food to the Fukushima disaster area to feed strays. I don't get it. There's 400,000 people there with lives shattered. Thousands of children have lost parents and siblings. Tens of thousands are still live in temporary shelters and these people are spending their time helping stray animals?

I am not pleased about this killing of pets or dolphins either, but instead of going and fighting about that, I have, for example, thousands of children with incurable diseases like deadly cancer that need help in my back yard right now. Pardon me for having twisted priorities but I think I'll spend my time helping handicapped and crippled and terminally ill kids... I can't stop people from feeding the animals or pigeons in the park, but I have to wonder where their priorities are.  

If you are going to talk the talk, walk the walk...

People have got to start thinking with their analytical minds, if they have any left. There was a time, several years ago, I was having a discussion with an extremely confused German friend. He insisted that,


"We need the government to make rules outlawing guns."


I completely disagreed. He then added,


"If the government doesn't make laws outlawing guns, then crazy and dangerous people will have guns!"


"You mean, like they do now?" I retorted.


If you believe that guns cause crimes and murders then you must believe that cameras cause child pornography. 


Personally, I don't think so. (By the way, Canada has many more guns per capita than the USA and does not have a gun murder problem so don't tell me that the USA problem is because of guns.)


Like, I said, people need to open their eyes and stop taking the propaganda they hear and see as gospel truth... 


The best thing would be for people to start thinking for themselves. But that might be asking for too much.

Lady Gaga Rips Off Japan and Her Fans

I have a report that Lady Gaga has ripped off her fans who bought a "Lady Gaga wristband". The proceeds from those wristbands were to be donated to the poor folks who suffered in Japan from the March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Seems like, as of this date, no proceeds have been forthcoming.

That event brought out tons of charlatans who used other people's misery for financial gain. You'd think that someone who were as rich as Lady Gaga would make sure that the money (I'm sure it's not a lot) would get into the hands of those who really need it instead of going towards her next wardrobe prupose.


But, like I have always stated, you have to be very careful with these "Pop stars" and their charities. Please refer to: "Clubbing Baby Dolphins and Out of Work Actresses":


As I have written before, people like Hayden Panettiere don't really give a rat's ass about any dolphins or anything like that, they only care about fame. 

Just like jerks like U2's Bono who prop up charities and claim to care about poverty (yet give only 1%) or Sting with his BS about rain forests or the next Hollywood clown who makes noise about endangered monkeys, it's all just blah, blah, blah... Yadda, yadda, yadda. These people don't really give a sh*t about these things. Their "charities" and work are all promotions capitalizing on other people's misery and they constitute tax breaks.

In Hayden's case, if she really did care about the Dolphins, she'd still be talking about it... But, she doesn't. She doesn't because, you see, the advertising budget for that film is over with and, well, she does have a movie star career to attend to.  


Far, far too often, these charities are just scams to evade taxes or just promotional gimmicks to make themselves look good.... But don't let my scorn for these fakes fool you. I also am a fair minded person, the Japanese Red Cross deserves heaps of criticism too.

Homeless and orphaned children in Japan after tsunami? Use their plight to rip off the public? Great idea! Cashing in on other people's misery! What an excellent marketing plan!

Well, now, we have Lady Gaga being accussed and sued in court for ripping off her fans for a charity to help the survivors of the March 11 disaster in Japan.

New York Daily News: Lady Gaga accused of pocketing Japan earthquake relief bracelet proceeds

"Lady Gaga has been a champion for relief efforts in recovering Japan, but now the singer is facing allegations she pocketed donations that should have gone to the ravaged country.

The federal class action lawsuit alleges Gaga (real name Stefani Germonatta) jacked up the shipping costs on the "We Pray for Japan" wristbands she designed and sold on her website after the March earthquake and tsunami, keeping a portion of the money from each sale despite her promise that all proceeds would go to directly to relief efforts."

In the July 14, 2011 issue of Tokyo’s English bi-weekly magazine, “Metropolis” is stated under “the Small Print - Going Ga-Ga”:

• A class action lawsuit filed in the US claims that Lady Gaga failed to donate proceeds of her “relief wristband” to victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

• The suit also alleges that the singer “charged buyers an excessive $3.99 for shipping within the United States, against the actual cost of only $.50 cents.”

Then, again, in Metropolis’s year end issue of December 14, 2011, it was reported again:

A class action lawsuit filed in the US claimed that Lady Gaga failed to donate proceeds of her “relief wristband” to victims of 3/11.

I have been searching for more information on this case but can find nothing to update the situation.

The best information I can find was in an article from Gossipcop.com. It was entitled, "Lady Gaga Accused of Charity Scam"

From that article:

Lady Gaga is being sued in a $5 million class action suit for allegedly scamming a Japan relief charity.

The singer said on her website that all proceeds from the sale of the “We Pray For Japan” wristbands were going to the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

But a Michigan law firm says that’s not true.

According to the lawsuit filed by 1-800-Law-Firm, Gaga sold the bracelets for $5, plus $3.99 for shipping and handling, and 60 cents for taxes, but jacked up the price of the shipping costs in an effort to pocket the extra money.

The federal suit also claims Gaga never disclosed how much of the $5 bracelets was actually going to Japan relief, even though she included the money she allegedly pocketed as part of her claimed donation.

The lawsuit says Lady Gaga violated a number of federal racketeering laws as well as consumer protection laws from the alleged scam.

Welcome to 2012... The scams and criminal activity of Wall Street and their like continue to trickle down to the average person.

I think 2012 is going to be one wild ride. Oh, and make sure to buy Lady Gaga's records. You might as well get in on the fun of being screwed over by corporate greed.

Empathy Survey - How Do You Feel When You See a Child Suffering?

I just bought a book by one of my favorite political columnists, Ted Rall. In the foreword, he talks about compassion and empathy. 


He wrote about a time he saw a homeless man and thought, "Thank god, if it weren't for a few lucky breaks, that could have been me." I've thought the same thing before many times too.


How about you?


I agree with what Ted writes in the book and will have a review of "The Year of Loving Dangerously" soon... But, until then, this...


I wonder about people today and think there are far too many people who feint compassion and concern, but it's all an act. Take, for example, the disaster of the earthquake and tsunami of March 11 in Japan. So many people I know were actually sincere and got off their asses and did something...


But I also thought there were way too many people who only helped and contributed because it made them look good doing so. There's nothing so wrong with that, I suppose, as long as people are honest with themselves and open about intentions.


There's a word for this and it's Crocodile Tears.


I also think that there is far too little compassion and empathy amongst people today as a general rule.


Take, for example, the poor people who have suffered in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures. Terrible situation indeed... But the mass media seem to have gone on and people are losing interest.


Is it human nature to do so? Or are we all just robots with heart strings being pulled by the mass media?


I wonder why people will get together to make (at least the appearance of) an effort to help people who are on TV and suffering far away, yet, in their own neighborhoods, they scorn and look down upon the unfortunate in their own neighborhoods?
